good morning, bay area. let's get up and get going. this is abc 7 mornings. hey, good morning, everybody. it is saturday, november 26th. i'm cornell bernard in for chris nguyen. we're in for a rainy morning. the north bay seeing rain, mill valley on highway 101. let's get to lisa argen, tracking the storm. >> good morning, cornell. and for you in fremont, hayward, and santa clara, you're getting pretty good rain as the cold front pushes through your area right now. it is in the east bay. you can see the brighter returns here from dublin and hayward. san leandro, up throug san ramon and danville, moderate rain and through 880, it has been raining pretty steadily right on through sunnyvale.

and boulder creek, where the front has already pushed through the bay area. we've had ponding on the roadway, highway 101, but the rain is lighter there. and fog has been an issue, anywhere from just two-mile visibility in hayward, to about five to six miles here. sfo delays of over an hour. cold sector behind the front, we could see a thunderstorm in addition to more heavy downpours. it will abe raw afternoon, just in the 50s. by 4:00, still some light rain. the second system is on the heels of this one tonight. i'll talk about the breaks, the totals and the snow in the sierra in just a few minutes. we have up to the minute weather information for you any time on the abc 7 news app. after you open the app on your phone or tablet, tap on the temperature, the top right corner, that will give you custom forecasts for where you live or work. you can also scroll down to see live doppler radar for your

neighborhood and everywhre in the bay area. breaking news out of the east bay this morning. a two alarm fire burned the moss wood recreation center in oakland, just before 5:30 this morning. the oakland fire department tweeted these videos. it is on mcarthur bullard. there are florts of ano evacuat. san jose police are trying to find out who sent a letter to a mosque threatening muslims. it was sent on ruby avenue in san jose. lillian kim has the story. >> reporter: the letter addresses it as the children of satan, calling muslim vile and filthy police. >> it was disturbing that, you know, some of our, you know, parishioners were a little

worried. >> reporter: this man is the president of the center, and officers arrived right away to investigate. >> we wanted to let the law enforcement know is that in case there is an unfortunate event, people are prepared. >> reporter: the letter says president-elect trump is going to do to muslim what is hitler did to the jews, and muslims would be wise to get out of dodge. a handful of local leaders, he received a copy of the letter. >> it is a direct threat by somebody, and it is not protected speech. it is definitely hate speech, and i think it rises to the level of a hate crime. >> the council on american relations says there has been a spike targeting muslims since the election. more than 100 nationwide. evergreen islamic center is heart ended by the overwhelming community support. the mosque says the phone has been ringing off the hook. >> thank god we live in a beautiful, blessed community like this.

life goes on. >> reporter: in san jose, lillian kim, abc 7 news. this morning, the south san francisco police officer who was hit in the head with a a skateboard remains in critical condition. he has been on the force for 12 years. he was attacked. the student is at skyline college and has a rap sheet. vic lee has details. >> my son didn't know. he is a little mental. >> reporter: the suspect, luis ramos' mother talked to us, saying her son has mental issues and takes medication. >> was he taking his medication? >> i don't know. he left very early in the morning. >> this grainy security video shows officer robby chan chasing the suspect, stops and strikes the officer who goes down. another security camera picks up the suspect, running down linden avenue after he attacked the officer. he was captured minutes later. the officer is a 12 year

veteran, he is married, and he has two young children. >> officer robby chung is with the motorcycle unit. starbucks customers got the officer to stop, and ramos darted down the street on his skateboard. >> antonio figerrora said there was a if foot chase and the suspect turned around and struck him in the head with his skateboard. he fell to the ground. the police chief says he has a long rap sheet. abc 7 has learned it includes felony battery, causing serious injury. assault with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest for disturbing the peace. ramos has been booked on attempted murder charge. vic lee, abc 7 news.

there is a go fund me account to help pay for medical bills. we have a link to donate on abc 7 news.com. now to the death of fidel castro, the former cuban president died at the age of 90. the announcement came from his younger brother, raul castro. >> reporter: hello, cornell. fidel castro, the world's longest serving dictator, is going to be laid to rest. his remains are going to be cre cremated and traveled around cuba. nine days of official mourning, such a contrast from cuban americans in this country. this is the scene from miami's little after havana. a few hours after the announce of his death. he was born on august 13, 1926 in cuba. as a child, he was educated at private catholic schools. castro became an activist for

the poor and promised democracy, but went on to rule cuba for more than 40 years with an iron fist. >> i am not afraid. i am convinced communist, i feel honored of being a communist and i hope it will be until the last breath. >> in 1960, castro joined forces with the soviet union. the u.s. retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations and trade embargo. john f. kennedy approved a c.i.a. invasion, who went ashore at the bay of pigs. castro was able to fend off the invasion, and in 1962, american spy planes discovered he allowed the soviets to put nuclear missiles in cuba. >> i have directed them to prepare for any eventualities. >> the soviets back downed for a pledge that america would not attack cuba. soviet style, castro eventually produced dissent. in 1980, thousands of cubas braved rough seas and

re-establishing ties with the u.s. and president obama's visit there earlier this year. the world will see more changes with fidel castro, gone. speaking of president obama, just a little bit ago, he issued a statement saying the hand of friendship is extended to the cuban people and president-elect trump also weighing in today, saying he hopes that the death of fidel castro will mark a new beginning towards freedom for the cuban people. reporting live in washington, abc 7, back to you cornell. >> okay, lana, thank you. an investigation into an early morning house fire that killed a 70-year-old woman. oak street and bur rel avenue around 4:30 yesterday and could not revive her. the cause of the fire is suspicious. >> this is the type of thing that touches us with the police department and the fire department. as much as it touches the rest of the community. we're dedicated to getting to the bottom of this and i finding

out what happened so if there are people to be held accountable, dwwe do that. >> in 2011, police shot and killed 35-year-old robert carone who lived in the house at the time. a $20,000 reward is being offered for information that will help lead to the capture of two jail escapees on the loose today. they broke out of the santa clara jail late wednesday. the pair, part of a group of four who sawed through met dal bars so they could climb down the street. they captured the escapees yesterday. the older sister of the woman who vanished for three weeks credits the public and social media for the woman's safe return. investigators believe two armed women abducted 34-year-old sherry papini while she was driving. she was dropped off on interstate 5 on thursday.

are leaders in prescribing it. none of the prep patients have contracted hiv. once the epicenter, they're using prep to dramatically turn things around. a steep drop in the number of hiv cases. the city of san francisco says it has gone down about 60% and prep is likely accelerating that. >> at the same exact time, other s tds have exploded. syfllus and gonorrhea have double the numbers. >> we're seeing a rise in other stis. >> director of hiv care and prevention says prep is one of a number of factors leading to this. lines outside free health clinics. people regularly show up an hour before opening to get a same day appointment. >> i was in line waiting for std treatment. >> eric says he doesn't always use condoms, a trend well before

prep. still, the timing is notable. in 2011, the cdc says 30% of gay men in san francisco reported using condoming consistently. prep hit the market in 2012. and by 2014, it dropped to 18%. >> small changes in condom use can actually lead to pretty big changes in rates of stds. >> dr. stephanie cohen is medical director at the city clinic. she hear what is we heard in line. >> i know what i can get myself into and still get treated and be okay at the end of the day. that's risky. that's risky. but it is what it is. >> people are going to do what they're going to do. >> supervisor scott wiener made national headlines as the first public officials on prep. >> i do not agree with the notion that because more people are getting clamdiya, that

sledding and children's activities at san rafael winter wonderland. more than 40 tons of snow was brought in to downtown san rafael for the annual event. the organizers said he left it a little steep on the hill there, but kids didn't mind. they were having a blast. >> it was fast, and i think it was a good event. it was really fun. >> the sledding continues today from 9:00 a.m. until noon, unless, unless the snow melts. there are also children's activities like face painting and jump houses and carnival rides. now your accuweather forecast. >> i want to apologize to those little kids right now for raining on your parade. what a bummer, rain in san rafael on top of the snow. here is it a look at live doppler 7, where the front is continuing to push through the south bay right now. so the winds have eased up a little bit, but the downpours continue from union city in fremont down through mill pedis,

a nice healthy rain. check out san jose, south of millpedis, right into san jose, and back westward from scotts valley to boulder creek, watsonville and gilroy. further south, it will head into san luis, sweep through big sure the next our or two and we'll be left with heavy rain throughout the afternoon. we're behind the front in the city here, san francisco lighter rain, dublin, 580, pleasanton, and it has been raining since about 3:00 not morning. the eastern extent, it is 35 degrees, blue canyon. not snowing yet, but the rain is pushing into the sacramento vall valley. the front has pushed through, and with the front, and scattered downpours, possibility of a thunderstorm this afternoon. anywhere from a quarter of an inch to an inch. the winds have backed off a

little bit, but higher elevations still gusty and it has been replaced with a winter weather advisory. that means good snow right on through tomorrow morning, 3 to 8 inches above 4,000 feet. a foot down near yosemite. the window has been closed. you can see, we're going to see 10 inches through south lake, 14 inches kirkwood. speaking of tahoe, 35 degrees in blue canyon. beautiful right now, sunny break in between the snow. we'll see that possibility of a thunderstorm here, simply because we're going to get some sunshine and add to the atmosphere becoming more unstable than the second system is on the heels of this one tonight. so not a big break out there at all. you can see how rainy it is from mount tam. 52 in oakland. 49 in gilroy. gray and foggy and cold in santa rosa. 48 degrees. hazard statement through 3:00 tomorrow. so it is going to be pretty

dangerous at the coast. so the front is to the east of us, and the next hour or so, then you'll see a bit of a break. look what happens. you can see the pink up here, the cold air, and we are a going to be looking at heavy downpours with scattered showers throughout the afternoon today. there will be breaks on and off, but not a lot. it will be the rainy day today and tomorrow, looks to be a little bit more dry and in fact, some sunshine through the afternoon. 8:00 tonight. you have dinner plans. it is still raining out there. and through the overnight hours, we're going to see additional downpours. any where from a half inch in n napa, san jose, picking it up tonight, looking at the heavy downpours. through your early sunday morning. then by about 10:00, we'll see some sunshine. it will be cool. and then the next system, it is a weak one. sunday night. so over in berkeley today, 55 degrees, chance of a thunderstorm, it is cool, raw,

bit. here's san jose, 280, look how slick it is. walnut skrecreek, drops on the . we're looking at delays at over an hour at sfo. we could see a thunderstorm for the game in berkeley, palo alto, looks soggy for the stanford game. it is a messy day today, but brighter, drier tomorrow, still we're tracking rain for your sunday morning. developing news out of cuba. fidel castro, the man who led a communist uprising and remained the leader for decades has died at the age of 90. he will be remembered a divisive world leader. to followers, he was a hero who became a champion for socialism. he jailed and executed thousands of political opponents. a central figure in several american policy flash points, including the bay of pigs.

cuban media says there will be a mass at the revolution plaza on monday and tuesday. his ashes will make a cross-country tour from havana to santiago. this is the scene this morning in little havana in miami. a live picture, where people have been celebrating in the streets ever since news of castro's death broke last night. president obama says we extend a hand of friendship to the cuban people and condolences to fidel castro's family. they have a friend and partner in the united states of america. president-elect trump said the world marks the passing of a brutal dictator who opposed, e oppressed his people. we told you about fidel castro's passing last night with a push alert from the abc 7 news app. download the app for free.

and enable push alerts to get breaking news updates as they happen. now to the latest on the presidential transition. president-elect trump is moving forward with his cabinet picks. former trump campaign lawyer, donald mccown has become his counsel and k.t. mcfarland has been named as national security advisor. meanwhile, reportedly an internal struggle for secretary of state, with advisors split over mitt romney or rudy giuliani. the president-elect may choose to go with someone outside of those options. former general, david petraeus has also expressed interest. no cabinet appointments will be made before monday. jill stein has raised more than $5.6 million for recounting in three key states. her campaign officially filed for a recount in wisconsin yesterday. >> what we are saying is that there is enough peripheral evidence to warrant that our

system should be investigated. >> now, the recount would have to be finished 35 days after the election, which is december 13th. michigan and pennsylvania recount deadline dates are next week. hillary clinton, who leads the popular vote, has not commented on the recount effort. new this morning, a river cruise ship that crashed into a bridge in florida shut down traffic for hours. it was wedged underneath the main street bridge in jacksonville last night for about four hours. the ship passed under the lifted bridge, but while it was attempting to dock, currents caused it to drift back toward the bridge which had been lowered. nobody was hurt. an extra police officer is patrolling broadway plaza in walnut creek, part of an unprecedented arrangement. leslie brinkley has the story. >> you have such a cute face. >> reporter: walnut creek police officer mark gonzalez is already making friends. >> you can either go this way.

>> reporter: for the first time, the walnut creek police department has partnered with a private company to assign a police officer to a shopping center. >> got nothing but positive response from the management of all the stores. they're happy to see a police officer will be dedicated to the area, provide service. so much quicker than if we were across town or somewhere else. >> reporter: officer gonzalez started november 15th, to handle shoplifting, credit card fraud and crime, here on the middle of a vast expansion project. >> they've added a lot of new stores, new merchants, a lot of additional retail space. we know that comes with that, it will be increased crime. >> reporter: the theory, a full-time officer here will free up other officers to respond to other neighborhood calls. >> i think it scares off people more. security, the security guards, they don't intimidate many, but a police officer, i think it is more intimidating. >> having a security officer who is also a police officer, i think it would be very beneficial for everyone's safety. >> no matter where shoppers go,

this year might be another rough one for crab fishermen. the coast will stay closed to commercial crab fishing, because of high levels of algae. officials announced the closure between point reyes and humboldt bay, scheduled to open december 1st. commercial crab fishing opened for the bay area earlier this month. last year, the season was shortened, because of a toxic algae bloom. lisa is here if you like rain. we've got it. storm moving in. >> yeah, right over santa cruz and livermore now, and through the summit. so san jose, also looking at pretty good rain. this is going to push through within the next 50 minutes or so, but right now, it is moderate to heavy rain. you'll see scattered showers behind it. talk about kind of a half and half sunday, and the sierra snow, all within the next 24 to 48 hours, in your forecast is next. all right, waves really

is getting enhanced along the shoreline, northern los angeles county, and finally, up in the north bay, looking at breaks and in san francisco, because we are behind the front. but look what happens behind it. light rain arrives and in fact, with a few peaks of sunshine, we could see a thunderstorm not only in the north bay, the east bay, even along the coast today. so our winter weather advisory replaces the winter storm warning in the sierra nevada. we'll still get downpours today, and that cold sector of air, any where from an additional quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch and the winds have come down. earlier on, they were up to 50 miles an hour. this is we're expecting the snow, upwards of a foot of snow throughi through yosemite.
